Dogecoin flies after Elon Musk tweets that some Tesla merchandise can be purchased with the meme coin

“Tesla merch purchasable with Dogecoin.”

This single tweet by electric car maker CEO Elon Musk sent the Dogecoin DOGEUSD meme coin,
+4.46%
jumping 14% to $0.198893 on Friday. This is against modest losses for bitcoin BTCUSD,
+10.90%
and the rest of the cryptocurrency space, in what has been a bumpy year so far for digital coins.

Musk sent Dogecoin flying in mid-December after announcing Tesla TSLA,
+5.99%
would accept dogecoin as payment for certain goods. “Tesla will make some products purchasable with Doge and see how it goes,” Musk tweeted at the time on Twitter TWTR,
-0.11%.

As for the specific goods that can be purchased with Dogecoins, Tesla’s website has listed a Cyberwhistle for 300 Doge on its website, while 12020 Doge will buy a Cyberquad for kids.

This isn’t the first time Musk has held the Dogecoin fortune in his hands. Last May, the meme coin slid 40% after the influential CEO made a joke about it on “Saturday Night Live.” The price of the meme coin had risen after Musk said Tesla would stop accepting bitcoin as payment for its cars and that dogecoin might be a better replacement.
