India’s merchandise exports and imports increase in January 2022

India’s exports of goods and services in January 2022 are forecast at $61.41 billion, up 36.76% year-on-year and 38.90% from January 2020 figures. Overall imports in January 2022 are pegged at USD 67.76 billion, decelerating 30.54% year-on-year and up 30.19% from January 2020.

Merchandise exports in January 2022 amounted to USD 34.50 billion, compared to USD 27.54 billion in January 2021, up 25.28%. Compared to January 2020, exports in January 2022 increased by 33.45%. Merchandise imports in January 2022 were calculated at USD 51.93 billion, a growth of 23.54% compared to USD 42.03 billion in January 2021. Imports in January 2022 also recorded a positive increase of 26 .19% compared to January 2020.

The merchandise trade balance for January 2022 was estimated at USD 17.42 billion, compared to a negative USD 14.49 billion in January 2021. In January 2020, the trade balance was negative at USD 15.30 billion, while the trade balance in January 2022, recorded negative growth of (-) 13.91 percent.

Merchandise exports in April-January 2021-22 amounted to USD 335.88 billion compared to USD 228.92 billion for the same duration last year, up 46.73%.

Merchandise imports during the April-January 2021-22 period amounted to USD 495.75 billion compared to USD 304.79 billion in the same period last year, up 62.65%.

The merchandise trade balance for April-January 2021-22 was pegged at minus USD 159.87 billion, compared to a negative balance of USD 75.87 billion in April-January 2020-21, down -110.71%.
