Cody Reynolds is the Character Art Director and has been a Disney cast member for over 25 years. He says the Disney Parks Blog that being part of the Disney Pride Collection meant “the world” to him:

Of everything I’ve had the privilege of working on, I can honestly say I have the most passion for the Disney Pride Collection and it’s the project I’m most proud to be a part of. Two things that define me as a person are Disney and being a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community – and this project brings those two things together in the most wonderful way. I especially love that in addition to the rebranding of the Disney Pride Collection, our main focus is to ensure we’re still proud and committed to creating year-round product for this collection. .

Reynolds shared he was excited to expand the collection beyond Disney and Mickey Mouse in 2021, adding star wars, Marvel and Pixar. He thinks there are elements of pride in every Disney story:

The expansion and diversification of offerings within the Disney Pride Collection has not only strengthened it from a content perspective, but it has also given the collection a broader and stronger voice and reach. I think there are elements of pride in all of our stories and being able to tap into a wider range of storytelling and the company’s legacy is amazing.

Her favorite piece from the Pride Collection 2022 is the Marvel Pride Shirt:

I love how the chosen powerful words that represent each of Marvel’s characters tie in seamlessly with who they are and their stories. Not only that, the op-ed also resonates and relates to words that evoke the heart and strength of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The Disney Pride collection comes amid controversy between The Walt Disney Company and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

In late February 2022, the Florida Legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis introduced the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, officially titled “The Parental Rights in Education Act.”

Members of the LGBTQIA+ community have been frustrated with Disney’s initial response to the law, which does not directly mention or condemn Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Pixar staff wrote The Walt Disney Company a letter asking the company to take a stronger stance against the bill.

A day later, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek called Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to tell him that Disney did not support the “Don’t Say Gay” law, which was later passed and promulgated. Disney has promised to suspend political donations in Florida due to the controversial bill after donating $4.8 million to Florida campaign funds in 2020.

Seen as retaliation for The Walt Disney Company’s tough stance against the “Don’t Say Gay” law, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis passed legislation disbanding the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which allowed Walt Disney World to operate private municipal services since 1967.

While proceeds from the Pride Collection will only be donated to LGBTQIA+ charities through June 30, fans can expect more Disney Pride merchandise all year long!
